Samsung Officially Announces 980 Pro, 2 Times Faster SSD Than Previous Generation

South Korea-based technology giant Samsung has listed the next-generation 980 PRO SSD, the successor to the 970 PRO SSD. The company stated that the next generation SSD is 2 times faster than the previous generation.

South Korean tech giant Samsung, which operates and produces products in many different areas, from smartphones to household goods, smartphone hardware to computer hardware, has listed its new SSD.

The company’s next-generation 980 PRO SSD comes with a PCIe Dec 4.0 interface. So, what are the specifications of the 980 Pro, which is aimed at the consumer platform in general, greatly speeding up the transfer of files and data?

Samsung 980 Pro SSD specifications

As a successor to the 970 PRO SSD, the 980 PRO SSD has three variants: 250 GB, 500 GB, and 1 TB. All three variants with similar characteristics work compatible with PCIe Gen 4. M.2 in order for these drivers, which are adopted by the 2280 figure factor, to be used, they must be used on PCIe Gen 4-compatible platforms such as AMD x570 or Intel Z490.

In the 980 Pro SSD, the nickel-plated thermal cooler is located on top of the SSD controller, while thin copper film will be used on the front and back of the PCB. Samsung will also use Dynamic Thermal Guard technology to maintain optimal thermal levels. The driver will benefit from the next generation, the specially designed Elpis controller and the 3-bit MTC.

As you can see from the image above, the sequential read speed and sequential write speed of the 1 TB model of the 980 Pro SSD can be up to 7,000 Mbps and 5,000 Mbps, respectively. Again, in the 1 TB model, the random read and random write speed is up to 1,000 K IOPS.

When TurboWrite technology is activated, the transfer rate under the IOMeter is up to 500 Mbps on a 250 GB drive, 1,110 Mbps on a 500 GB drive, and 2,000 MBps for a 1 TB model. Samsung also says that PCIe Gen 4 is up to 2x faster than PCIe Gen 3 and up to 12.7 times faster than SATA SSDs. There is no information on what the price tags of these drivers will be.
