What is new with AMD Precision Boost Overdrive 2

We are looking closely at Precision Boost Overdrive 2 technology, which can deliver performance improvements with a single setting, gain different features and update.

AMD offered one-click overclocking for Ryzen processors with Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) technology that it had previously developed. While this feature had a positive impact on performance in multithreaded workloads, it was relatively ineffective in single-threaded jobs. But in December, the new Precision Boost Overdrive 2 update will be included in the BIOS codes, and that will change. The new PBO2 will also improve single-thread performance while maintaining existing multi-core performance gains.

Curve Optimization

The new Curve Optimization feature can adjust voltage according to operating conditions in different situations when the processor is idling and under heavy load. This feature works automatically and plays an auxiliary role in the overclocking process.

Adaptive Undervolting

Now for the Adaptive Undervolting feature. Thanks to this feature, voltage values can be defined as “progressive” and each stage will consist of 3-5 millivolt slices up to a maximum of 30 stages. AMD says enabling this feature can lead to up to 2% higher single-thread performance and up to 10% better multi-thread performance. Because lower temperatures allow the CPU to strengthen more aggressively under these conditions.

Users who reduce the voltage in their processors gradually reduce the CPU voltage in the process, and then perform stability tests thanks to games or other special applications. So much so that your processor does not work at 100% load at all times, and there is always room to keep the voltages low. AMD’s Adaptive undervolting approach will help users in this regard.

Performance Boost

As you know, silicon quality can often vary from processor to processor. Therefore, your processor may have much higher overclocking potential depending on your chances. PBO’s adaptive algorithm allows you to get the highest performance from your Clover. As with the first-generation PBO, the new PBO2 will exceed the processor’s AM4 socket power limit, offering performance increases depending on your chips ‘ capabilities, power distribution for the chip, and cooling solution.

Finally, let’s look at AMD’s tests on the Ryzen 7 5800X and Ryzen 9 5900X processors. Performance criteria mentioned performance improvements achieved when PBO is turned off, on, and using the new PBO2.

About Precision Boost Overdrive 2

Precision Boost Overdrive 2 will initially be released as a BIOS-only option. But AMD plans to include it in its Ryzen Master software early next year.

Add that this updated technology is only supported on Ryzen 5000 series processors, but can be used on 400 and 500 series chipsets. New BIOS updates based on AGESA version 1.1.8.0 will be available to all users in December and you can start using them afterwards.Before we finish, let’s note that this feature may have different nomenclature on the BIOS according to motherboard manufacturers.
